Overview
This unit will introduce to students how planning, critical thinking and fieldwork is utilised during the academic research process. How do you discover what’s known and unknown about your topic of interest? How do you summarise and synthesize that knowledge? How do you develop original research questions that are worth pursuing? How do you collect and analyse relevant data? How do you communicate interesting empirical patterns and complex ideas in an informative, clear and compelling manner? As students explore these questions, they will develop two central research skills that are invaluable in any profession: how to work with existing research, and through hands-on assignments, they will learn that the foundation of any kind of expertise is collection and/or analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data.
