Overview

In this unit, you will explore the concepts of place-based, experiential and outdoor learning as pedagogical approaches that transcend subject areas. You will undertake and analyse environmental and sustainability concepts and practices as facilitated in educational experiences. You will develop an appreciation of your local environment, culture and communities through exploring how these can be integrated into teaching and learning. You will delve into cultural, social, economic, ecological and political influences that impact attitudes and actions towards environmental and sustainability education. Local environmental issues will be explored throughout the unit as a way of informing global perspectives, including how various forms of exploitation, exclusions and constraints influence student access to learning. You will develop theoretical and pedagogical knowledge of how to develop holistic learning experiences for environment and sustainability education and the curricular opportunities available to do so.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    critically reflect upon your environmental and sustainability experiences and their connections to place

    communicate the importance of Country within Indigenous culture and integrate into teaching practice to celebrate its ongoing

     research, develop and present a learning experience for environment and sustainability.

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours
