Overview

This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2021. For details of changes, please consult the 2022 Change register.

This specialisation will prepare you to teach children and adolescents (5 – 18 years of age) in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of learning as a developmental continuum and will learn to employ diverse pedagogical approaches to meet the differentiated learning needs of students. At the primary level Foundation to Year 6, you will develop the knowledge and skills to teach across all primary curriculum areas. In doing so, you will develop your knowledge of cross curriculum priorities and the curriculum areas you will teach, such as: English and literacies, mathematics and numeracy, arts education, humanities and social education, science and health and physical education. You will select to complete extended studies in either English/literacy or mathematics/numeracy. Completion of this study sequence will enhance your expertise in these key curriculum areas. At the secondary level Year 7 to Year 12, you will qualify as a specialist teacher in one discipline area; your unit choices within your discipline studies sequence will determine your specialist area as a secondary teacher. You will develop an understanding of adolescent learning and development in a secondary education environment including areas such as: curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, and education and its relationship to society.
