Overview

This unit is designed to develop and enhance your teaching practice. With its focus on assessment to support effective learner centered teaching, the unit begins by demonstrating effective approaches to assessment and ends with opportunities to enact approaches to assessment that impact student learning and or effective teaching. Central to this unit, is the exploration of: the various dimensions of and approaches to formal and informal assessment and how data is gathered, evaluated, moderated and deployed to support learning and; how resources can be used to support assessment approaches, communication and reporting with a focus on learners and learning. The unit models effective approaches to assessment, informed by research, and provides opportunities for learners to practice the enactment of effective assessment strategies.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    identify and critically review a range of assessment practices to determine their fit for purpose and alignment with curriculum and pedagogy

    effectively select a range of assessment practices and reporting strategies to inform planning, support teaching and learning, evaluate progress, empower learners, provide effective feedback, benchmark and suggest ways to improve practice

    draw on a range of resources (including effective use of ICT) to support well developed assessment practices, communicate outcomes effectively and adjust practice accordingly

  4. 4

    use assessment data to inform teaching and improve learning outcomes

  5. 5

    work effectively in small groups to analyse multiple sources of student data, moderate assessments, suggest ways to improve teacher practice and evaluate the impact of teaching on learning.

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding.
