Overview
This unit will explore the relationship between language, context and teaching through the use of systemic functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics. In particular, the unit will examine the functions of language used in teaching resources and explore grammatical and other resources that help shape language meanings. You will engage with approaches and models of language use and participate in text selection, analysis, and explanations of language to students. Through the unit, you will be able to describe, analyse and interpret language and language functions in a variety of different contexts in order to inform your teaching and learning practices. This unit will enable you to use and explain authentic texts in lessons, to design effective and engaging teaching resources that allow for learning (through) language, and to justify your pedagogical decision making.
