Overview
This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge and pedagogical skills acquired from previous TESOL units in a classroom context. You will complete 60 hours of professional experience or the equivalent of 22 days with an average of 2-3 hours of teaching and observation each day that combines class observation and supervised teaching practice. You will observe experienced teachers, assist in classroom activities, and gradually take on responsibility for planning and delivering your own lessons.
TESOL teachers commonly work in diverse and dynamic environments where they interact with learners from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. As a teacher, you will need to demonstrate flexibility, cultural awareness, and the ability to build supportive and respectful classroom relationships. This unit gives you the opportunity to practise and develop these professional skills through feedback and guidance.
In addition to supervised teaching, the unit focuses on reflective practice, professional communication and teacher collaboration through the community of practice. You will engage in a range of activities that support collaboration, critical reflection, and the evaluation of classroom strategies to enhance your professional growth. A key focus of this internship is the development of your professional knowledge and skills in alignment with professional standards for teachers alongside your ability to critically reflect on your own practice. This unit consolidates your prior learning and prepares you for future employment in the TESOL field.
Note: This unit does not provide a recognised initial teaching qualification. If you are seeking an initial teaching qualification, refer to the information on the Faculty of Education's Master of Teaching course.
