Overview

This Theme 4 unit facilitates integration and application of knowledge and skills gathered from core units across the other 3 themes such as “Fundamentals of Human Nutrition”, “Nutrition, Health and Behaviour”, “Nutritional Epidemiology”, “Nutrition throughout Lifecycle” and “Assessment of Nutritional Status”. Students will experience professional placement experience in community settings in this unit.

You will be expected to develop a nutrition program in small groups incorporating suitable dietary and physical activity guidelines, scientific evidence and recommendations. Experienced academic advisors will supervise and support the student groups through the program development, implementation and evaluation.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Recognize and understand the national and international frameworks for primary health care and health promotion.

    Show the ability to collect, organize and evaluate nutrition and health related data of the members of a community.

    Develop the skills of incorporating available scientific evidence, recommendations and guidelines on diet and physical activity into nutrition program development.

    Demonstrate clear understanding of planning, implementation and evaluation of nutrition programs/interventions for a specific group, community or population.

    Apply prior knowledge of core concepts in nutrition, behaviour and health, counselling technique and nutrition education in real-life setting.

    Discuss the multifactorial and complex nature of nutritional issues that are major challenges for nutrition interventions in the community.

    Demonstrate the ability to work sensitively and inclusively in a community setting.

    Demonstrate the practice of evidence-based nutrition, professionalism, teamwork and communication skills in the field.

    Demonstrate the ability to communicate nutrition program design in written and oral formats.
