Requisite map
Overview
Chemical engineers transform raw materials into useful and commercial end products. This involves the research of raw materials and their properties, design and development of equipment and the evaluation of operating processes. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in chemistry and chemical thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material and energy balances, as well as particle technology and process design.
In this specialisation, you will have the opportunity to also pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements chemical engineering.
Availability
Chemical engineering is listed in E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Clayton and Malaysia as an undergraduate specialisation.

Rules
- Part C. Core specialist studies (108 credit points);
- Part D. Professional practice (0 credit points); and
- Part E. Elective studies (36 credit points).
Part C. Core specialist studies108 credit points
- the following units (102 credit points); and
- one unit (6 credit points) from the Professional Practice domain list.
Note 1: If you complete CHM1011, CHM1051 or CHE2161 in your Part B First Year breadth studies, it will count towards your chemical engineering study. You must still fulfil the First Year breadth studies requirement by completing another breadth studies unit.
Note 2: E3008 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science double degree students - you must replace CHM1011/CHM1051 with one Level 3, 4 or 5 chemical engineering unit from CHE3172, CHE5322, CHE5882, CHE5883, CHE5889, due to overlapping content with BPS1031/BPS1032.
Note 3: You can complete only one of CHM1011 or CHM1051.

Part D. Professional practice
Clayton campus students: To meet the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard to be a Professional Engineer you must enrol in ENG0001 in your final year and satisfy the professional development requirements.
Malaysia campus students: To meet the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia industrial training requirements to be a Professional Engineer, you must enrol in ENG0002 in the second semester of your third year and complete the industrial training.
Part E. Elective studies36 credit points
- In year 2: 12 credit points at Level 1, 2 or 3 from the Faculty of Engineering or other faculties;
- In years 3 and 4: 24 credit points at Level 3, 4 or 5 from the Technical electives list.
Note 1: Electives must be completed at the required unit level to satisfy the course requirements.
Note 2: You may use your elective studies to complete an engineering minor, or any unit from an engineering minor, that will complement your specialisation. If you select a single unit you must ensure you meet the unit prerequisites or co-requisite rules. This will allow you to tailor your studies and broaden your knowledge within the field of engineering while still aligning with your chosen specialisation.
Note 3: You may enrol in up to two units (12 credit points) at Level 5. To be eligible to enrol in Level 5 units, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of Level 3 and be in your final year of study. If you intend to enrol in the Master of Engineering, completing Level 5 units that are core in the Master's course will reduce the total duration of your Master's study.
Double degree students are not required to complete this Part. The 36 credit points of technical electives have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore are not a requirement in the double degree courses.

Notes
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
CPD is a compulsory requirement for all Engineering students. You must complete 420 hours of continuous professional development in order to graduate with the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) qualification. It is a collection of all work including volunteer, personal and professional practice experiences outside the classroom which may be in the form of 12 weeks of relevant vacation employment or an equivalent combination of approved professional development and/or engineering employment taken throughout the duration of the course. You must submit a series of reflections on your experience with particular reference to the development of each of the key Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies. Visit the Student Experience website for more information about professional development.
The Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia has similar professional experience requirements. Further information is available on the Industrial training website.
Please note that this Area of Study was previously coded as CHEMENG04.
