Overview

The communications and media studies program equips you with practical and conceptual tools to understand and engage with media in a rapidly changing, globalised world. The major emphasises media research, policy, and cultural analysis, preparing you to interpret, critique, and shape the media industries, technologies, and practices that structure contemporary communication.

You will examine the histories and transformations of media industries, the organisations and regulation of media and communication systems, and the shifting dynamics between media producers, audiences, and policy-makers. Alongside theoretical study, you will develop analytical, research, and creative skills to investigate how media intersects with culture, politics, and power. The program takes an international perspective, enabling you to situate Australian media within global contexts and to address contemporary challenges such as digital disruption, platformisation, and the role of generative AI in media production. A key focus is on building both critical media literacy and applied competence with media technologies. It prepares you to work across the public and private sectors, with the ability to analyse, evaluate, and create across diverse formats and settings.
