Overview
Monash ground-breaking and multidisciplinary extended major in European Languages will make you a proficient or advanced speaker of one of more European languages, and a citizen of the world, able to explore and navigate cultures and societies across Europe, Africa, Latin America and beyond. With the extended major, you will study two languages chosen from French and Francophone studies, Italian studies, German studies and Spanish and Latin American studies. You can start the language core component of the major at introductory (absolute beginner), intermediate or proficient level.
Studying European Languages will allow you to understand the deep interconnections between different European languages and cultures, the global impact of Europe over time, and how European cultures have been strongly challenged and deeply influenced by other cultures and societies across the globe. Your study of language, literature, history, film, arts, and popular culture will introduce you to some of the most influential ideas that have shaped our world and to the new ideas that will shape the future.
You will be able to study in-country and immerse yourself in the language. We offer opportunities for study tours and study abroad in Europe, Cuba and New Caledonia.
There is a growing need for professionals with excellent language and cultural skills. English alone is just not enough. Employers seek people with a real ability to communicate and translate across languages, cultures and societies. This extended major will provide you with the knowledge and skills that are applicable to a great variety of careers in business, government, NGOs, education, communication, and the cultural sector.
Together with language skills, this major will develop your digital and intercultural literacy, and your ability to think creatively and critically – all essential skills for any professional career. We will design with you a personalised plan, identifying clear graduate outcomes, pathways to postgraduate studies, and opportunities to use your language and cultural skills in a professional environment. In your final year you will have the opportunity to apply your language and intercultural skills in context, through a project and an internship that will be tailored to your particular interests. This will also allow you to develop a strong complementarity between the major in European Languages and your other fields of studies.
