Part C. Free elective study48 credit points
In double degree courses, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards the Arts degree.
You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit for an opportunity to apply coursework to real world situations and develop workplace skills.
You can enrich your degree by using some of your free electives to take a study tour, field trip or exchange opportunity. You can also use this space to hone your academic and professional skills with an internship or a range of practical units. See Arts enrichment https://www.monash.edu/students/handbooks/faculty-info/undergrad/arts/enrichment-units and Monash Intercultural Lab https://www.monash.edu/students/handbooks/faculty-info/undergrad/arts/monash-intercultural-lab-units lists of units to discover the breadth of options available.
The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code; undergraduate units are those that commence with the numbers 1-3. You may need permission from the owning faculty to enrol in some units taught by other faculties.
The handbook's description of this structure
This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:
Part A. Arts listed major
This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.
Part B. Arts specified study
This will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major. You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains.
Part C. Free elective study
This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or of arts, humanities and social sciences more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol. You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit. Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real-world situations and develop workplace skills. You can also use your free electives for study tours, field trips, internships, exchange opportunities or explore the Arts enrichment and Monash Intercultural Lab for other available options.
Master's accelerated pathway
If you satisfy the below requirements, you may be invited to join the master's accelerated pathway program:
- have achieved a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65%; and
- have completed a minimum of 96 credit points in your bachelor degree, including 24 credit points towards your Arts major.
Please note that you should also have a minimum of 24 credit points of free electives available.
On joining the accelerated pathway your 24 credit points of free elective units will be replaced with specified units from your destination master's degree. As long as you attain a minimum WAM of 60% at the end of your bachelor studies, you will be eligible to continue your chosen master's studies the following year.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 points): a minimum of 96 points of arts listed study over Part A and Part B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.
To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts you must complete 144 credit points as specified in the course requirements, including:

You may have satisfied this by completing relevant prerequisite unit/s, or by studying relevant topics in your final years of secondary school or by successfully completing either ECC1550 Introduction to quantitative skills for social sciences or MTH1010 Functions and their applications, as a first-year elective.
Units are 6 points unless otherwise specified.

The Psychology extended major (APAC accredited level 1 sequence of units) is only offered in the single degree Bachelor of Arts (A2000) or in the double degree Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts (S2006).
