The Monash Bachelor of Arts is designed to give you maximum flexibility and choice. You can choose from over forty areas study to build a genuinely transformative experience. The course is built around deeply enriching experiences, including local and international internships, professional engagements and entrepreneurial opportunities, and the choice of over fifty global immersion programs. You will build a unique graduate profile, preparing you to live and work in complex and culturally diverse environments. You may like to continue on in your learning journey and complete honours or postgraduate study.

The Bachelor of Arts has four optional signature elements which build skills and abilities that employers value and seek. You will not be required to do any single specific unit across these domains. Instead, you can build your own signature suite of experiences and attributes to create a graduate profile that is unique to you:

Global Immersion

Broaden your knowledge and life experience by participating in the Global Immersion Guarantee or one of our other short study trips or a semester-long programs. Our high quality international mobility experiences help our graduates to engage in the world and prepare them for the global workplace.

Intercultural Expertise

Build skills to thrive in globalised work places and communities. The reality for all our graduates is that they are competing in a global employment market and whether they find themselves in local, national or international organisations these will all be multi-cultural environments. The capacity to successfully navigate the complexities of culturally different environments is a signature capability of an Arts graduate. These units are designed to specifically address the development of our students’ capabilities.

Through industry internships and placements, create networks and skills for your career development. Professional experiences allow you to start activating your knowledge in real world scenarios. It aids you to see your learning in an employment context.

Innovation Capability

Cultivate an innovation mindset as you develop your creative and enterprising abilities. These units offer you the opportunity to understand and build innovation capabilities and enterprising skills. You are challenged to seek/build the solutions required to transform our world by leveraging your own experiences and activities outside the classroom.

Course structure

Rules
In choosing units you must ensure you complete no more than 60 credit points at level one, and at least 36 credit points at level three of which at least 24 credit points must be arts units. It is recommended that you keep your options open in your first year by taking a sequence of units in at least two different areas of study that offer majors within arts.
Double degree students
If you are completing a double degree you must complete no more than 36 credit points at level one Arts units and at least 36 credit points at level three of which at least 24 credit points must be arts units.
Part A. Arts listed majors and extended major48 credit points
You must complete one of the following majors with no more than 12 credit points at level one and at least 18 credit points at level three.

APAC - Psychology extended major

60 credit points
If you are completing the APAC Psychology extended major below you will be required to complete 60 points of Psychology units and 36 credit points of Arts units which must include an minor (24 credit points) and signature elements (12 credit points).
Part B. Arts specified study48 credit points
It is recommended that you complete level two units in more than one area of Arts to give you options for finalising your choice of major at level three. You must complete an Arts minor (24 credit points) and signature elements (12 credit points) and additional Arts units (12 credit points). You may replace the minor with a second arts major by using additional units available in Part B or elective units in Part C.

Arts listed minors

24 credit points
You must complete one of the following minors, in an area of study different to the chosen major from Part A and with no more than 12 credit points at level one.

Arts electives

12 credit points
You must complete 12 credit points selected from units listed under any major or minor offered in the Bachelor of Arts.
Part C. Free elective study48 credit points
You must complete 48 credit points of free electives from across the university, provided you satisfy the unit rules. Elective units may be chosen from units available in the Bachelor of Arts course to complete a second major or minor(s) from the course. At most, two level one units may be counted towards two majors or a major and a minor. You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit for an opportunity to apply coursework to real world situations and develop workplace skills. In double degree courses, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards the Arts degree.

Master's accelerated pathway

24 credit points
High achieving students, who have completed all of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and are in good standing with the faculty, may be able to progress to a master's course. By the second year of the course you will have decided on your intended major, and confirmed your destination master’s degree. You will use four of your elective studies (Part C) to complete 24 credit points of specified units from your destination master's degree.
The handbook's description of this structure

This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:

Part A. Arts listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

Part B. Arts specified study

This will expose you to several arts disciplines areas of study contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It will also give you the opportunity to learn about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major and minor. 

Part C. Free elective study

This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or of arts, humanities and social sciences more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol. You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit. Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real-world situations and develop workplace skills.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 points): a minimum of 96 points of arts listed study over Part A and Part B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.

In choosing units you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 level one units (60 points), and at least six units (36 points) at level 3 of which at least four (24 points) must be Arts units. Included in your selection of Arts units, you must complete 12 points of signature element units.

It is recommended that you keep your options open in your first year by taking a sequence of units in at least two different areas of study that offer majors within arts.

If you are completing a double degree you must complete no more than six level one Arts units (36 points) and at least 36 points at level three of which at least 24 points must be Arts units.

Units are 6 points unless otherwise specified.

Part A. Arts listed major (48 points)

Complete at least one arts listed major. A major requires eight units with no more than two units at level one (12 points) and at least three units (18 points) at level three.

If you are intending to undertake an honours year you should ensure you complete the specific units required as a pre-requisite for honours in the chosen major area of study.

Part B. Arts specified study (48 points)

If you complete one arts listed minor (24 points) in an area of study different to the chosen arts major from Part A and a further 24 points of Arts electives. Included in your selection, you must complete 12 points of signature element units.

A minor requires four units with no more than two units (12 points) at level 1. You may replace the minor with a second arts major by using elective units available in Part B or Part C.

It is recommended that you complete level two units in more than one area of arts to give options for finalising your choice of major at level three.

Part C. Free elective study (48 points)

Elective units may be chosen from units available in the Bachelor of Arts course to complete a second major or minor(s) from the course. Note that, at most, two level one units may be counted towards two majors or a major and a minor.

You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit.  Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real world situations and develop workplace skills.

Elective units may also be taken from non-arts disciplines to broaden knowledge or to complete a major or minor(s) from another course as long as you have completed the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolment in the units.

If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards the arts degree.

Other applicants

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Diploma graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 70% Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.
VET Certificate IV graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based Cert IV will require an average result of at least 80%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. No credit is granted for these studies

University: To be considered on the basis of tertiary study alone, applicants who have completed VCE or equivalent will be required to complete the equivalent of one year (48 credit points) of a recognised university degree and will require an average result of at least 60% (including failed units). For applicants who have completed less than the equivalent of one year of study, both the senior secondary qualification results and the units completed will be considered.

For applicants who do not have any formal qualifications completion of two single units at an Australian higher education or equivalent overseas educational institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but four units are recommended to be competitive for selection, especially in Humanities or Social Science areas. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies (including failed units). Studies must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.

Monash Minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS: 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or TOEFL Paper-based test: 550 with a TWE of 4.5; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Progression to further studies

Honours

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to A3701 Bachelor of Arts (Honours). You must have completed a major within your chosen honours area of study and obtained a distinction grade average (70%) or above in 24 credit points of studies in relevant units at level two and three, of which 24 credit points must be at level three in the major in which you wish to undertake honours. For some majors, completion of specific units or their equivalent are required for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each major to which this applies.

Master's pathway

To progress to a masters course you must have completed all the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts with a 60 per percent average.
