Part C. Free elective study48 credit points
The handbook's description of this structure
This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:
Part A. Arts listed major
This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.
Part B. Arts specified study
This will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major. You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains.
Part C. Free elective study
This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or of arts, humanities and social sciences more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol. You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit. Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real-world situations and develop workplace skills.
Master's accelerated pathway
High achieving students, who have completed all of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and are in good standing with the faculty, may be able to progress to a master's course.
By the second year of the course you will have decided on your intended major, and confirmed your destination master’s degree. You will use four of your elective studies (Part C) to complete 24 points of specified units from your destination master's degree.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 points): a minimum of 96 points of arts listed study over Part A and Part B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.
In choosing units you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 level one units (60 points), and at least six units (36 points) at level 3 of which at least four (24 points) must be Arts units. Included in your selection of Arts units, you must complete 24 points of units from the Professional Futures domains.
You may use your Arts electives in Part B. and C. to complete a double major, but please note that no more than two units can normally be credited towards two majors.
It is recommended that you keep your options open in your first year by taking a sequence of units in at least two different areas of study that offer majors within arts.
If you are completing a double degree you must complete no more than six level one Arts units (36 points) and at least 36 points at level three of which at least 24 points must be Arts units.
Units are 6 points unless otherwise specified.
Part A. Arts listed major (48 points)
You must complete one arts listed major. A major requires eight units with no more than two units at level one (12 points) and at least three units (18 points) at level three.
It is recommended that you complete level two units in more than one area of arts to give options for finalising your choice of major at level three.
If you are intending to undertake an honours year you should ensure you complete the specific units required as a pre-requisite for honours in the chosen major area of study.
Part B. Arts specified study (48 points)
You must complete 24 points of Arts elective units which can be combined into a minor in an area of study different to the chosen arts major from Part A. and 24 points of units from the Professional Futures domains.
Note: if you are enrolled in the double degree D3002 Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts you must complete only 12 points of units from the Professional Futures domains instead of 24 points; and the remaining 12 points should be selected from the 2nd year Arts' elective units.

You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit. Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real world situations and develop workplace skills.
Elective units may also be taken from non-arts disciplines to broaden knowledge or to complete a major or minor(s) from another course as long as you have completed the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolment in the units.
Free electives can be identified using the [[http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/search][browse units]] tool and [[http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/][indexes of units]] in the current edition of the Handbook. The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code; undergraduate units are those that commence with the numbers 1-3. You may need permission from the owning faculty to enrol in some units taught by other faculties.
If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards the arts degree.
