Overview
Our world needs graduates who thrive in an era of uncertainty and change. In the Monash Bachelor of Arts you will cultivate your intellect, foster your passions and develop your capacity to ask the questions and find the solutions required to transform our world.
The Monash Bachelor of Arts is designed to give you maximum flexibility and choice. You can choose from over thirty areas of study to build a genuinely transformative experience. The course is built around deeply enriching experiences, including local and international internships, professional engagements and entrepreneurial opportunities, and the choice of over fifty global immersion programs. You will build a unique graduate profile, preparing you to live and work in complex and culturally diverse environments. You may like to continue on in your learning journey and complete honours or postgraduate study.
The Bachelor of Arts has four Professional Futures domains which build skills and abilities that employers value and seek. You will not be required to do any single specific unit across these domains. Instead, you can build your own suite of experiences and attributes to create a graduate profile that is unique to you:
Global Immersion
Broaden your knowledge and life experience by participating in the Global Immersion Guarantee or one of our other short study trips or a semester-long programs. Our high quality international mobility experiences help our graduates to engage in the world and prepare them for the global workplace.
Intercultural Expertise
Build skills to thrive in globalised work places and communities. The reality for all our graduates is that they are competing in a global employment market and whether they find themselves in local, national or international organisations these will all be multi-cultural environments. The capacity to successfully navigate the complexities of culturally different environments is a signature capability of an Arts graduate. These units are designed to specifically address the development of our students’ capabilities.
Professional Experience
Through industry internships and placements, create networks and skills for your career development. Professional experiences allow you to start activating your knowledge in real world scenarios. It aids you to see your learning in an employment context.
Innovation Capability
Cultivate an innovation mindset as you develop your creative and enterprising abilities. These units offer you the opportunity to understand and build innovation capabilities and enterprising skills. You are challenged to seek/build the solutions required to transform our world by leveraging your own experiences and activities outside the classroom.
Course structure
Rules
To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts you must complete 144 credit points as specified in the course requirements, including:
• a maximum of 60 credit points at Level 1; and
• a minimum of 36 credit points at Level 3, of which at least 24 credit points must be Arts units.
Units are 6 points unless otherwise specified.
Part A. Major studies48 credit points
• a maximum of 12 credit points at Level 1; and
• a minimum of 18 credit points at Level 3.
Note:
• It is recommended that you complete a sequence of level 1 units in more than one Arts major area in order to have options for finalising your choice of major.
• If you intend to complete the Economics major, the background knowledge and application of maths is required at the equivalent VCE Year 12 Higher level. You may have satisfied this by completing relevant prerequisite unit/s, or by studying relevant topics in your final years of secondary school or by successfully completing either ECC1550 Introduction to quantitative skills for social sciences or MTH1010 Functions and their applications, as a first-year elective
• The European languages extended major requires entry level 2 intermediate in at least one of two language options.
• The Psychology extended major (APAC accredited level 1 sequence of units) is only offered in:
- A2000 Bachelor of Arts; and
- S2006 Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts.
• If you intend to complete honours in your major area, you should check the required pre-requisites (e.g., specific units/credit points etc) to ensure you meet eligibility requirements.

Professional Futures
24 credit pointsNote: If you are enrolled in the double degree D3002 Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts, you must complete 12 credit points of units from the Professional Futures domains and the remaining 12 credit points should be selected from level 1, 2 or 3 Arts' elective units.
For your discipline studies in the double degree secondary education specialisation, you must complete a Victorian Institute of Teaching minor study in one secondary teaching area. The minor study must consist of four units, with no more than two units at first year level. Space for the minor study units will come from elective unit allocations on the course map. Approved disciplines can be found on the secondary specialist areas page.

Part C. Free elective studies48 credit points

Note: no more than two units (12 credit points) can be credited towards two majors, or a major and a minor. The same credit points cannot be credited towards more than one minor.
You may also use your free electives to explore different disciplines and experiences offered from across Monash. This includes taking undergraduate units^, minors or majors offered by other Faculties* and participating in University programs* such as Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE).
Elective units may be at any level ensuring that the course rules are satisfied for the Bachelor of Arts.

The handbook's description of this structure
The course is structured in three parts: Part A. Major studies, Part B. Specified studies and Part C. Free elective studies.
Part A. Major studies
These units will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.
Part B. Specified studies
These units will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major. You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains.
Part C. Free elective studies
These units will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or to investigate other areas of interest. You may choose electives from units offered within the Bachelor of Arts or any other Arts undergraduate course, or you can explore different disciplines and experiences offered from across Monash. This includes taking undergraduate units offered by other Faculties, and/or participating in University programs such as Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE).
Bachelor + Master's accelerated pathway
If you satisfy the below requirements, you may be invited to join the bachelor + master's accelerated pathway:
- have achieved a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65%; and
- have completed a minimum of 96 credit points in your bachelor's degree, including 24 credit points towards your Arts major.
Please note that you should also have a minimum of 24 credit points of free electives available.
On joining the accelerated pathway your 24 credit points of free elective units will be replaced with specified units from your destination master's degree. As long as you attain a minimum WAM of 60% at the end of your bachelor studies, you will be eligible to continue your chosen master's degree the following year/intake.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 points): a minimum of 96 points of arts listed study over Part A and Part B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.
To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts you must complete 144 credit points as specified in the course requirements, including:

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.
- VET Diploma graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a Humanities or Social Science based diploma will require an average result of at least 70% Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.
- VET Certificate IV graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a Humanities or Social Science based Cert IV will require an average result of at least 80%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. No credit is granted for these studies
- University: To be considered on the basis of tertiary study alone, applicants who have completed VCE or equivalent will be required to complete the equivalent of one year (48 credit points) of a recognised university degree and will require an average result of at least 60% (including failed units). For applicants who have completed less than the equivalent of one year of study, both the senior secondary qualification results and the units completed will be considered.
- For applicants who do not have any formal qualifications completion of two single units at an Australian higher education or equivalent overseas educational institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but four units are recommended to be competitive for selection, especially in Humanities or Social Science areas. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies (including failed units). Studies must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Honours
Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to A3701 Bachelor of Arts (Honours). You must have:
- completed 48 credit points of studies within your chosen honours area of study;
- obtained a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 24 credit points of studies in your chosen honours area of study at Level 3; and
- an overall WAM of 75 in your completed undergraduate degree.
For some disciplines, completion of specific units or their equivalent are required for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each discipline to which this applies.
