Overview
Through Monash’s minor in European Languages you will study one of French and Francophone studies, German studies, Italian studies and Spanish and Latin American studies. The language core component of the minor is available from introductory (absolute beginner), intermediate or proficient level. You can study more than one European language through the extended major or by completing a major and a minor in European Languages.
Studying European Languages in a global context will provide an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the interconnections between different European languages and cultures, the global impact of Europe over time, and how European and other cultures and societies across the globe have challenged and deeply influenced each other.
There is a growing need for professionals with excellent language and cultural skills. English alone is just not enough. Employers seek people with a real ability to communicate and translate across languages, cultures and societies. This minor will provide you with the knowledge and skills that are applicable to a great variety of careers in business, government, NGOs, education, communication, and the cultural sector. Together with language skills, this minor will develop your digital and intercultural literacy, and your ability to think creatively and critically – all essential skills for any professional career.
