Overview

With this engineering/arts double degree, you will have a portfolio uniquely tailored to meet your interests and aspirations, while providing complementary skills in technology and communications. It offers diversity, flexibility and more career choices, along with the transferable skills employers are seeking: communication, teamwork, research and critical thinking.

The common first year in engineering provides scientific and design foundations. It focuses on real-life problems to illustrate the interaction between engineering and society and introduces the range of engineering disciplines available. You will pursue your specialist engineering discipline from year two. At the same time, the arts course provides you with a comprehensive gateway to approximately forty areas of study across the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Course structure

Engineering component144 credit points
You must complete 144 credit points comprising all of Parts A, B, C and D as described in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and satisfy the continuous professional development requirements (See ENG0001 or ENG0002).

The Common First Year consists of Parts A and B.

Part A. Engineering fundamentals and breadth study

18 credit points
You must complete the engineering fundamentals AND breadth study requirement

Engineering fundamentals

12 credit points

Breadth study

6 credit points
You must complete one 6 credit point unit chosen from the First Year engineering breadth study list. If you are required to complete foundational study, the foundation unit is undertaken in place of the First Year engineering breadth unit. If you require both foundation units, the second foundation unit will increase your total credit points needed for the double degree by 6 credit points. A study overload will occur in Year 1 or 2.

First Year engineering breadth study list

6 credit points
Note 1: CHM1011 and CHM1051 are mutual prohibition units, meaning that you can only complete either CHM1011 or CHM1051.

Note 2: If you complete a First Year engineering breadth unit that happens to also be a core unit in your chosen specialisation, you must complete an additional unit from the breadth study list to fulfil the First Year engineering breadth study requirement.

Note 3: Intending to specialise in chemical engineering: You are strongly advised against taking MEC2404 as a First Year elective, as it has some content overlap with CHE2161. Completing MEC2404 may result in insufficient foundational preparation for the subsequent core unit CHE3167 in the chemical engineering specialisation.

Foundational study

12 credit points
If you have not completed either or both VCE Physics (Units 3 and 4) and VCE Specialist mathematics (Units 3 and 4) or equivalent and with the required study score, you must complete the following physics and/or mathematics foundation units.

To check the required study score, visit https://www.monash.edu/engineering/current-students/enrolment-and-re-enrolment/how-to-enrol-and-re-enrol/course-information/undergraduate-enrolment
Arts component96 credit points
You must complete 96 credit points from Parts A and B as described in the Bachelor of Arts.

Part A. Arts listed majors and extended major

48 credit points
You must complete one of the following majors with no more than 12 credit points at Level 1 and at least 18 credit points at Level 3.

It is recommended that you complete Level 2 units in more than one area of arts to give options for finalising your choice of major at Level 3.

European languages extended major

72 credit points
You have the option of reaching proficient level in two European Languages by completing an extended major. You must begin at entry level 2 intermediate level in at least one of the two languages.

Part B. Arts specified study

48 credit points
You must complete one of the following units

Professional Futures

18 credit points
You must complete 12 - 18 credit points from the units in the following Professional Futures domains.

Note: If you choose to complete MON2100, you must complete 12 credit points in this section. If you choose to complete ATS3173, you must complete 18 points.

Global immersion

You may complete the following units or any of the Arts study tours or semester length programs by submitting an enquiry to Monash Connect. Please note, study tours must be offered by the Faculty of Arts in order to be counted as Professional Futures units.

Please visit https://www.monash.edu/arts/learning-abroad/global-study-tours for more information.

Arts elective units

24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points of Arts elective units which can be combined into a minor of study different to the chosen major from Part A and with no more than 12 credit points at level 1.

Double degree courses include the features of the component degree courses, except that electives may be reduced.

Engineering

E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a specialist course that develops through four themes that combine to underpin engineering practice: fundamentals and breadth study, design, knowledge and applications, and professional practice.

Part A. Engineering fundamentals and breadth study

This will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines. If you have not completed the Australian VCE (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent Specialist mathematics and/or Physics with the required study score you will need to enrol in the foundation units ENG1090 and/or PHS1001.

Part B. Engineering design

These units will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.

Part C. Engineering knowledge and application

These units will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering, and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.

Part D. Professional practice

These units will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.

Arts

A2000 Bachelor of Arts is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Arts listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

Part B. Arts specified study

This will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major. You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete 240 points, of which 144 points are from the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (including all of the requirements in Parts A, B, C and D as described for the chosen specialisation); and 96 points from the Bachelor of Arts (including all of the requirements in Parts A and B for the single degree).

In Part A of the Bachelor of Arts, you can only choose a major from the following list:

  • Chinese studies
  • European languages
  • Indonesian studies
  • International relations
  • Japanese studies
  • Korean studies
  • Philosophy
    or
