Overview
With this engineering/arts double degree, you will have a portfolio uniquely tailored to meet your interests and aspirations, while providing complementary skills in technology and communications. It offers diversity, flexibility and more career choices, along with the transferable skills employers are seeking: communication, teamwork, research and critical thinking.
The common first year in engineering provides scientific and design foundations. It focuses on real-life problems to illustrate the interaction between engineering and society and introduces the range of engineering disciplines available. You will pursue your specialist engineering discipline from year two. At the same time, the arts course provides you with a comprehensive gateway to approximately forty areas of study across the arts, humanities and social sciences.

The handbook's description of this structure
Double degree courses include the features of the component degree courses, except that electives may be reduced.
Engineering
E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a specialist course that develops through four themes that combine to underpin engineering practice: fundamentals and breadth study, design, knowledge and applications, and professional practice.
Part A. Engineering fundamentals and breadth study
This will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines. If you have not completed the Australian VCE (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent Specialist mathematics and/or Physics with the required study score you will need to enrol in the foundation units ENG1090 and/or PHS1001.
Part B. Engineering design
These units will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.
Part C. Engineering knowledge and application
These units will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering, and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.
Part D. Professional practice
These units will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.
Arts
A2000 Bachelor of Arts is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:
Part A. Arts listed major
This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.
Part B. Arts specified study
This will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major. You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
You must complete 240 points, of which 144 points are from the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (including all of the requirements in Parts A, B, C and D as described for the chosen specialisation); and 96 points from the Bachelor of Arts (including all of the requirements in Parts A and B for the single degree).
In Part A of the Bachelor of Arts students can only choose a major from the following list:
- Chinese studies
- European languages
- Indonesian studies
- International relations
- Japanese studies
- Korean studies
- Philosophy
or - European languages - extended major
In Part B of the Bachelor of Arts students students must complete at least one of the following units (MON2100 Global immersion guarantee program or ATS3173 Workplace innovation project) as part of the Professional Futures Domain.
