The handbook's description of this structure
The course develops through the five themes of Part A. Core studies, Part B. Education studies, Part C. Curriculum studies, Part D. Discipline studies and Part E. Professional experience. The nature and proportion of units required among these themes will differ depending upon your specialisation and discipline studies.
Part A. Core studies
The core studies include essential units that are part of every Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation. These units are designed to ground you in evidence-based practices, preparing you to navigate diverse classroom environments and enhance student learning effectively. A key focus of this theme is developing your knowledge and skills to choose strategies that support students to learn, retain, and apply knowledge effectively.
You will explore effective teaching practices, such as sequencing for learning, modelling expected outcomes, assessing and reporting student progress, and providing constructive feedback to support student growth. Classroom management is another major component where you will learn to create structured, supportive environments using clear rules, routines, and high expectations. You will also develop skills to build positive relationships with students, engaging them actively in their learning journey. Inclusivity is embedded throughout the units and you will gain foundational knowledge of First Nations cultures and perspectives, along with other enabling factors that promote cultural responsiveness and support for diverse learners. These units will equip you to become an adaptable, culturally aware, and skilled teacher, ready to apply evidence-based practices for impactful and inclusive teaching and learning.
Part B. Education studies
The units in this sequence cover essential aspects of learning to teach and are tailored to each specialisation to prepare you appropriately to enter the profession in your chosen sector (early childhood, primary, secondary, or a combination of these). These studies include an examination of the learning and teaching relationship, child and/or adolescent development, alongside classroom culture and practice. You will build your professional skills, knowledge and understanding of teaching through a process of personal inquiry into effective teaching practices, informed by current research. These units will challenge you to consider global and local influences on education as well as the effective and innovative incorporation of emerging technologies to ensure the relevance of your teaching. You will build a deep understanding of learners, families, schools and communities. Societal trends are explored as well as how to effectively engage local communities, parents and carers.
Part C. Curriculum studies
With a focus on the Victorian Curriculum, these units will provide you with the content-specific knowledge pedagogies, covering the early years framework, Foundation–10 curriculum, as well as specific pedagogy appropriate for teaching VCE in a particular discipline or disciplines. You will develop the understanding and skills needed to become a skilled, innovative and effective educator who is able to draw on a repertoire of strategies to suit particular students, educational contexts and learning outcomes. You will learn how to design, plan and implement engaging learning experiences to meet diverse learners' needs. You will develop your knowledge and skills in key learning areas relevant to the educational level of your specialisation, deepening your understanding of teaching and learning, assessment strategies, theories and practices related to the subjects you will be teaching.
If you are enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Health and Physical Education, you will be prepared to teach in three secondary teaching areas: health, physical education and one other area of your choice.
If you are enrolled in a primary/secondary specialisation, you will be prepared to teach in one secondary teaching area as well as the curriculum areas required for teaching in primary schools.
If you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education double degree course, you will be prepared to teach in two secondary teaching areas. You will also be required to successfully complete a unit that develops skills in teaching literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, ensuring you have the skills and expertise to share in the responsibility of educating literate and numerate learners.
Part D. Discipline studies
These units are designed to develop your content knowledge in the key learning areas that you will be teaching in schools or other education settings. These units are offered as integrated curriculum/discipline studies in the early childhood and primary, and primary specialisations, and as a standalone discipline studies sequence in all other specialisations. They will provide you with a focused sequence of study that will deepen and advance your knowledge in your teaching specialist areas. The number of units completed in this sequence is unique to each specialisation and accordingly aligns and reflects the different needs of the early childhood, primary and secondary school sectors.
Part E. Professional experience
Integral to the course, the professional experience opportunities have been designed as a developmental learning sequence that you will engage with at every stage of your course. This component is an opportunity for you to build connections between the core, education, curriculum and discipline themed unit content and apply these in a professional context. You will operate within a particular social and legislative environment unique to your placement setting, and interact with sector professionals as you work collaboratively with them whilst on placement. An opportunity to further explore these professional elements is facilitated through the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) unit.
