Overview

Engineering involves the application of science. Many engineers are fascinated by scientific investigation and eager to enhance their understanding of the pure sciences. Likewise, many scientists wish to see their theories applied towards new technologies. If either of these describes you, then this double degree course is ideal for you.

Personalise your study from nine engineering specialisations and over twenty areas of science. The result is an educational experience uniquely tailored to meet your interests and aspirations. The various combinations offer diversity, flexibility and numerous career options.

The first year provides the scientific and design foundations for engineering. It focuses on real-life problems to help you understand the interaction between engineering and society. It also introduces the range of engineering disciplines. You will pursue your specialist engineering discipline from year two.

The combinations of engineering and science fields are almost limitless. You might combine environmental engineering with atmospheric science, ecology and conservation biology, genetics, plant sciences, zoology, chemistry, computational science, geographical science or statistics. Or you could augment your aerospace degree with studies in physics or astrophysics, pair mechanical engineering with applied mathematics, or combine chemical engineering with geosciences. The choice is yours.

Course structure

Engineering component144 credit points
Science component96 credit points
In choosing the 96 credit points of the Bachelor of Science listed study over Part A and Part B, you must ensure that you complete six science listed units (36 credit points) at Level 1, and ten science listed units (60 credited points) at Levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of four (24 credit points) at Level 3. You will complete the mathematics and statistics requirement of the Bachelor of Science when you complete ENG1005 Engineering mathematics in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). In its place, you must complete an additional science unit.

The psychology extended major is not available in this double degree.

Double degree courses include the features of the component degree courses, except that electives may be reduced.

Engineering

E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a specialist course that develops through four themes that combine to underpin engineering practice: fundamentals and design studies, breadth studies, specialist studies and professional practice.

Part A. Engineering fundamentals and design studies

These units will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.  If you have not completed the Australian VCE (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent Specialist mathematics and/or Physics with the required study score you will need to enrol in the foundation units ENG1090 and/or PHS1001.

Part B. Breadth studies

These units will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.

Part C. Specialist studies

These units will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.

Part D. Professional practice

These units will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.

Science

S2000 Bachelor of Science is a comprehensive course, structured into three equal parts. In this double degree course you complete:

Part A. Major studies

This part offers a coherent and in-depth program of study that allows you to develop expertise within one or more science disciplines. It supports both depth and breadth in your scientific education, enabling you to engage deeply with at least one chosen discipline while also gaining exposure to other areas of science. Through this flexible structure, you will explore different fields before refining your focus and build a strong disciplinary identity. You will develop advanced understanding of the core concepts and theoretical frameworks that underpin your discipline and learn to apply and communicate this knowledge effectively in scientific contexts.

Part B. Specified studies

This includes core requirements in mathematics, statistics or coding, ensuring you develop the quantitative foundations essential for scientific study, alongside a communication unit that supports the development of effective scientific communication skills. Together, these elements help build key capabilities that are highly valued across the workforce.
