Overview

The Master of Specialist Paramedic Practice offers registered paramedics the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills to enable them to practice at an advanced level in their chosen specialisation. This course is designed to prepare paramedics for future positions and practice in clinical leadership, education and research.
Students will develop autonomous clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities based on an advanced understanding and interpretation of clinical presentations.
They will also learn and demonstrate advanced techniques and treatment regimes which will enable them to provide the highest level of out-of-hospital care for their specialist area of paramedic practice.
This course fosters the integration of reflection, professionalism, leadership, team work, interpersonal communication, and patient focused care at an advanced level into all areas of clinical practice.
Paramedics will also develop skills in research methods and be guided through a research project in an area of interest relevant to their specialisation.

You must compete 24 credit points of elective units chosen from any Monash Postgraduate units that are relevant to this specialisation and in consultation with the Course Coordinator.

The Master of Specialist Paramedic Practice consists of 72 credit points of study structured into two parts:  Clinical Units (48 credit points) and Research Units (24 credit points).

Clinical Units These studies will extend the students clinical knowledge and practice in their chosen specialisation. (48 credit points)

Research Units These studies will further advance and broaden the students understanding and capacity to conduct research related to their chosen specialisation. (24 credit points)

The course comprises 72 points structured into two parts:  Clinical Units (48 credit points) and Research Units (24 credit points).

The Intensive Care Stream consists of 48 credit points of core units with no electives. 

The Aeromedical Retrieval Stream consists of 48 credit points of core units and 24 credit points of electives.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

  • MAP5010 Advanced health practice research project (12CP)

b. The following units for the chosen specialisation:

Aeromedical retrieval (48 credit points)

You must complete:

  • Core clinical units (24 credit points)

    • PAR5200 Introduction to aeromedical retrieval
    • PAR5210  Professional practice in aeromedical retrieval
    • PAR5230 Aeromedical retrieval coordination, OR PAR5240 Aeromedical retrieval rescue for intensive care paramedics
    • PAR5220 Clinical aeromedical retrieval for advanced life support or critical care practitioners,  OR PAR5250 Clinical aeromedical retrieval for intensive care paramedics
  • Elective units (24 credit points)

    • Electives can be chosen from any Monash Postgraduate units that are relevant to this specialisation and in consultation with the course coordinator.

Intensive Care Stream (48 credit points)

You must complete:

  • Core clinical units (48 credit points)
    • PAR5401 Foundations of advanced paramedic practice (12CP)
    • PAR5420 Intensive care management of cardiac conditions
    • PAR5430 Intensive care management of respiratory conditions
    • PAR5440 Intensive care management of trauma and environmental conditions
    • PAR5480 Intensive care management of medical conditions
    • PAR5450 Advanced care paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients
    • PAR5460 Transition to intensive care paramedic practice, OR PAR5470 Transition to intensive care clinical practicum

Above Monash minimum: Level B that is: IELTS 6.5 overall with Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6, or TOEFL Paper-based test: 550 with TWE of 4.5; or TOEFL internet-based test score of 79 overall with Listening: 20, Reading: 19, Writing 21, Speaking:18, or Equivalent approved English test

Notes for students

This course is not available to international students who are holders of an Australian student visa, for study onshore in Australia. However holders of some other categories of Australian visas living in Australia, and students studying off-campus by distance learning (where this option is available) and living outside of Australia, may be eligible for this course.
