Overview
The Master of Critical Care Paramedicine offers registered paramedics the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills to enable them to practice at an advanced level. This course is designed to provide you with the necessary education and training for a critical care paramedic role as well as prepare you for leadership, education and research positions. The course fosters the integration of reflection, professionalism, leadership, teamwork, interpersonal communication, and patient focused care at an advanced level into all areas of clinical practice.
The course is designed to provide you with the skills and training to successfully complete a critical care internship and provide the highest level of paramedic care for cardiac, respiratory, medical, trauma, paediatric and obstetric patients. You will develop autonomous clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities based on an advanced understanding and interpretation of clinical presentations. You will also learn and demonstrate advanced techniques and treatment regimes which will enable you to provide the highest level of out-of-hospital care for your specialist area of paramedic practice. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to choose between a coursework or research pathway.

The Master of Critical Care Paramedicine is structured into two parts: Part A. Clinical studies and Part B. Discipline elective studies.
Part A: Clinical studies
These studies will extend your clinical knowledge and practice in your chosen specialisation.
Part B: Discipline elective studies
These studies will further advance and broaden your understanding. You will have the opportunity to choose between one of the following pathways:
a) Coursework – in this pathway you will undertake a core capstone unit (PAR5104 Prehospital Quality Improvement and Clinical Leadership), and combine it with a program of units to suit your career interests. In the capstone unit, you are expected to integrate, extend and apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to real-world professional practice development, particularly in relation to project management and implementation and communication, that can contribute to more effective practice and outcomes.
b) Research – in this pathway you will gain the practical skills required to formulate a research question and design and assess a research project. If you wish to use this master's course as a pathway to a higher degree by research you should take this option. Consultation with the Course Director is required prior to enrolment in the research project units.

Part A. Clinical studies (48 points)
You must complete the following units:

- PAR5420 Critical care management of cardiac emergencies
- PAR5430 Critical care management of respiratory and airway emergencies (12 points)
- PAR5440 Critical care management of trauma
- PAR5450 Advanced care paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients
- PAR5480 Critical care management of medical emergencies
Part B. Discipline elective studies (24 points)
You must complete one of the following pathways:
