Overview

The Master of Critical Care Paramedicine offers registered paramedics the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills to enable them to practice at an advanced level. This course is designed to provide you with the necessary education and training for a critical care paramedic role as well as prepare you for leadership, education and research positions. The course fosters the integration of reflection, professionalism, leadership, teamwork, interpersonal communication, and patient focused care at an advanced level into all areas of clinical practice.

The course is designed to provide you with the skills and training to successfully complete a critical care internship and provide the highest level of paramedic care for cardiac, respiratory, medical, trauma, paediatric and obstetric patients. You will develop autonomous clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities based on an advanced understanding and interpretation of clinical presentations. You will also learn and demonstrate advanced techniques and treatment regimes which will enable you to provide the highest level of out-of-hospital care for your specialist area of paramedic practice. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to choose between a coursework or research pathway.

You must complete one of the following pathways

a. Coursework pathway

24 credit points
You must complete MAP5003 and 12 credit points of elective units.
Electives can be chosen from any Monash Postgraduate coursework units that are relevant to this course, and in consultation with the Course Director.

You must complete 12 credit points of elective units. Electives can be chosen from any Monash Postgraduate coursework units that are relevant to this course, and in consultation with the Course Director.

The Master of Critical Care Paramedicine is structured into two parts: Part A. Clinical Units and Part B. Advanced application Units.

Part A: Clinical Units

These studies will extend your clinical knowledge and practice in your chosen specialisation.

Part B: Advanced application Units

These studies will further advance and broaden your understanding. You will have the opportunity to choose between one of the following pathways:

a) Coursework – in this pathway you will undertake a core capstone unit (MAP5003 Essentials of advanced health care practice), and combine it with a program of units to suit your career interests. In the capstone unit, you are expected to integrate, extend and apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to real-world professional practice development, particularly in relation to project management and implementation and communication, that can contribute to more effective practice and outcomes.

b) Research – in this pathway you will gain the practical skills required to formulate a research question and design and assess a research project. If you wish to use this master's course as a pathway to a higher degree by research you should take this option. Consultation with the Course Director is required prior to enrolment in the research project units.

The course comprises 72 points structured into two parts:  Part A. Clinical Units (48 points) and Part B. Advanced application Units (24 points).

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Clinical Units (48 points)

You must complete the following units:

  • PAR5401 Foundations of advanced paramedic practice (12 points)
  • PAR5420 Critical care management of cardiac emergencies
  • PAR5430 Critical care management of respiratory and airway emergencies (12 points)
  • PAR5440 Critical care management of trauma
  • PAR5450 Advanced care paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients
  • PAR5480 Critical care management of medical emergencies

Part B. Advanced application Units (24 points)

You must complete one of the following pathways:

a. Coursework pathway

  • MAP5003 Essentials of advanced health care practice (12 points)
  • 12cp of elective units. Electives can be chosen from any Monash Postgraduate coursework units that are relevant to this course, and in consultation with the Course Director.

OR

b. Research pathway

  • MAP5000 Research in advanced health professional practice (12 points)
  • MAP5010 Advanced health practice research project (12 points)

Monash Level B, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (with individual band scores of Writing: 6.0, Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.5 and Speaking: 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 58 overall with minimum scores: Writing 50, Listening 58, Reading 58, Speaking 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing 21, Listening 20, Reading 19, Speaking 18; or Equivalent approved English test
