Overview
The Master of Specialist Paramedic Practice offers registered paramedics the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills to enable them to practice at an advanced level in their chosen specialisation. This course is designed to prepare paramedics for future positions and practice in clinical leadership, education and research. This course fosters the integration of reflection, professionalism, leadership, team work, interpersonal communication, and patient focused care at an advanced level into all areas of clinical practice.
You will develop autonomous clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities based on an advanced understanding and interpretation of clinical presentations. You will also learn and demonstrate advanced techniques and treatment regimes which will enable you to provide the highest level of out-of-hospital care for your specialist area of paramedic practice. Furthermore, you will develop skills in research methods and be guided through a research project in an area of interest relevant to your specialisation.

The Master of Specialist Paramedic Practice consists of 72 credit points of study structured into two parts: Part A. Clinical Units and Part B. Research Units.
Part A: Clinical Units
These studies will extend your clinical knowledge and practice in your chosen specialisation.
Part B: Research Units
These studies will further advance and broaden your understanding and capacity to conduct research related to your chosen specialisation.

The course comprises 72 points structured into two parts: Part A. Clinical Units (48 points) and Part B. Research Units (24 points).
Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Clinical Units (48 points)
Aeromedical retrieval
You must complete:
a. Core clinical units (24 points)
- PAR5200 Introduction to aeromedical retrieval
- PAR5210 Professional practice in aeromedical retrieval
- PAR5230 Aeromedical retrieval coordination, OR PAR5240 Aeromedical retrieval rescue for intensive care paramedics
- PAR5220 Clinical aeromedical retrieval for advanced life support or critical care practitioners, OR PAR5250 Clinical aeromedical retrieval for intensive care paramedics
b. Elective units (24 points)
- Electives can be chosen from any Monash Postgraduate units that are relevant to this specialisation and in consultation with the course coordinator.
Intensive Care (48 points)
You must complete:
- PAR5401 Foundations of advanced paramedic practice (12 points)
- PAR5420 Intensive care management of cardiac conditions
- PAR5430 Intensive care management of respiratory conditions
- PAR5440 Intensive care management of trauma and environmental conditions
- PAR5480 Intensive care management of medical conditions
- PAR5450 Advanced care paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients
- PAR5470 Transition to intensive care clinical practicum
Community Care (48 points)

Above Monash minimum: Level B that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (with individual band scores of Writing: 6.0, Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.5 and Speaking: 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with minimum scores: Writing 50, Listening 58, Reading 58, Speaking 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing 21, Listening 20, Reading 19, Speaking 18; or Equivalent approved English test
