Overview

This unit introduces you to the fundamental principles of microbiology and immunology, with a particular focus on their relevance to pharmaceutical sciences. You will engage with topics such as epidemiology, host-pathogen interactions, and strategies for controlling microbial growth and transmission with physical, chemical and pharmacological methods. The unit introduces specialised discipline-based laboratory techniques to develop practical skills, and foster critical thinking through the integration of microbiological and immunological concepts applied to real-world scenarios.

    apply the fundamental concepts of microbiology and immunology, to solve problems involving microscopy, microbial physiology, genetics, epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions

    demonstrate a range of microbiology and immunology-based laboratory techniques and relate experimental results to theoretical concepts

    demonstrate an appreciation of factors involved in contamination control, control of infectious diseases, and the processes of pathogenesis

    compare and contrast different viral replication strategies of bacterial and mammalian viruses

  5. 5

    design and report experimental investigations in a way that is consistent with the conventions of the discipline.
