Global design studio

DGN3000

Synopsis

This unit is only offered in Prato (Italy) in Semester 2, and enrolment is via an application and approval process. It can replace either Studio 4 (CDS3001 / COL3001 / IDN3001 / SDN3001) or Studio 5 (CDS3002 / COL3002 / IDN3002 / SDN3002) in your Design specialisation.

In this unit you will come together as designers across the disciplines of communication, spatial, collaborative and industrial design to build a design relationship between Australia and Italy. Based in Prato, you will engage in a design studio that builds interdisciplinary working relationships, shared creative practices, and the confidence to contribute to important issues impacting the discipline of design within an international context.

Engaging with a range of practices situated overseas will help your design work become more responsive to specific communities while you develop your ability to deploy your individual and collective skill sets to generate design solutions that are responsive to different sites and cultural contexts beyond Australia.

The unit aims to consolidate the knowledge, skills and application abilities you have developed throughout your specific course to then collectively generate unique design solutions that help to shape just and sustainable futures through the lens of an international experience. The unit provides you with an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of design practice and the important role you play as individuals to co-create a shared understanding of design problems and approaches.

This unit intersects a range of methods such as mapping, visual storytelling and prototyping to develop ideas and dialogues between different design practitioners and the stakeholders they are designing for.
