Overview

NOTE: This specialisation has had changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2019. For details of changes, please consult the 2020 Change register.

This specialisation will prepare you to teach children and adolescents from five to 18 years of age in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12 and will equip you with specialist knowledge and skills for working in inclusive and special education settings and within mainstream schools, supporting the diverse learning needs of students. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of learning as a developmental continuum and will learn to employ a range of pedagogical approaches. At the primary level Foundation to Year 6, you will develop an understanding of how primary school aged children learn, including those with special needs, and how they can be taught effectively and creatively across all primary curriculum areas.  In doing so you will develop your personal knowledge of cross curriculum priorities and the curriculum areas you will teach such as: English and literacies, mathematics and numeracy, arts education, humanities and social education, science and health and physical education. You will select to complete extended studies in either English/literacy or mathematics/numeracy. Completion of this study sequence will enhance your expertise in these key curriculum areas. At the secondary level Year 7 to Year 12, you will qualify as a specialist teacher (Years 10-12) in one discipline area; your unit choices within your discipline studies sequence will determine in which area you become a specialist secondary teacher. You will develop an understanding of adolescent learning and development in a secondary education environment, especially for students with special needs, including areas such as: curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, and education and its relationship to society.
