Arts

A2000 Bachelor of Arts is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In this double degree you complete:

Part A. Major studies

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

Part B. Specified studies

These units provide you with high quality, in-class student experiences that support a broader sense of belonging within and across the Bachelor of Arts. Through these studies you will develop:

  • graduate attributes in a broad base of knowledge of the humanities, social sciences and creative arts and industries;
  • a global perspective in the application of that knowledge, especially focused on social, cultural and political change; and
  • interdisciplinary teamwork, digital and communication upskilling focused on sharpening skills for future workplaces and global leadership.

Art History and Curating

F2021 Bachelor of Art History and Curating is structured in five parts and develops through theme studies in critical contexts, disciplinary and applied disciplinary practices, and discipline electives. These will come together during the final two studio units in the third year of the course, and final projects will be exhibited in the graduate exhibition. In this double degree you complete: 

Part A. Critical contexts

These studies will equip you with the skills necessary to research fine arts issues and provide the research methods relevant to your studio or workshop practice. They will enable you to contextualise your own practice and communicate ideas and strategies. Through the prism of history, as well as reference to bodies of knowledge relevant to cultural production, you will begin to situate the place of art in society.

Part B. Disciplinary practices

The studies will assist you to develop the perceptual, practical and intellectual skills required by art, design and architecture students in the discipline of drawing. This will introduce you to occupational health, safety and environmental training particularly within the context of studying art, design and architecture. 

Part C. Applied disciplinary practices 

Through this component of the course you will develop key skills and concepts particular to your specialisation. Through lectures and seminars, studios or practice driven workshops, you will develop the capacity for independent cultural production within fine art and related fields. Interdisciplinary skills and practices will be explored in conjunction with critical thinking. You will have the opportunity to interact with topics and students from a range of relevant fields in the arts.

Part D. Discipline electives

These elective studies provide you with the opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge and practice through the selection of electives in Fine Art. In these studies, you can choose to complete an internship or undertake a unit abroad or select units in your discipline that are of interest.

Other information

The Bachelor of Art History and Curating will educate you in all aspects of creative visual practices and cultures and will also enable you to build a high level of expertise art history and curating. You will engage directly with professional artists as well as with practitioners from allied creative fields including art theory, administration, management, education, writing, design and the curatorial.

Art history and curating will prepare you to operate effectively within the expanded field of art history, criticism, curating and cultural production more generally. You will be able to situate fine art in relation to broad social, cultural, environmental, historical and theoretical developments, explore forms of writing about art and visual culture, and study curatorial theories and practice related to the presentation, interpretation and promotion of art works in exhibition settings. 

The Bachelor of Arts provides you with flexibility, choice and the chance to follow your passions. Across the course, you will complete Arts major studies and specified studies. Choosing from approximately 30 areas of study from across the humanities and social science disciplines, your major is a concentration of subjects that equip you with specialised knowledge in a specific area or field of study.

Complementing your major studies, your specified studies focus on building essential capabilities in four specialist areas: career-ready creative and critical thinking, leading collaboratively and cross-culturally, innovative approaches to solving global challenges, and leading with purpose. Through these specified studies, you will develop a powerful set of future-ready core competencies - such as effective communication, critical thinking, and ethical leadership - to support you as you go out into the world to work with empathy and influence, communicate across cultures, solve complex challenges, and create positive change. These transferable skills and acquired core knowledge will provide you with essential attributes that employers value and will support your future career readiness as you will have the confidence to work across cultures, technologies and industries.
