Overview

Through Monash’s ground-breaking and multidisciplinary major in European Languages you will become a proficient or advanced speaker of one or more European languages (French, German, Italian and Spanish), and a citizen of the world, able to explore and move between cultures and societies across Europe, Africa, Latin America and beyond. You will be able to specialise in French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies or Spanish and Latin American Studies. The language core component of the major is available from introductory (absolute beginner), intermediate or proficient level. You can study more than one European language through the extended major or by completing a major and a minor in European Languages.

Studying European Languages in a global context will develop a deeper understanding of the interconnections between different European languages and cultures,  the global impact of Europe over time, and how European and other cultures and societies across the globe have challenged and deeply influenced each other. Your study of language, literature, history, film, arts, and popular culture will introduce you to some of the most influential ideas that have shaped our world and to the new ideas that will shape the future

You will be able to study in-country and immerse yourself in the language. We offer opportunities for study tours, study abroad and internships in Europe, Latin America and the South Pacific.

There is a growing need for professionals with excellent language and cultural skills. English alone is just not enough. Employers seek people with a real ability to communicate and translate across languages, cultures and societies. This major will provide you with the knowledge and skills that are applicable to a great variety of careers in business, government, NGOs, education, communication, and the cultural sector.

Together with language skills, this major will develop your digital and intercultural literacy, and your ability to think creatively and critically – all essential skills for any professional career. We will work with you to develop a personalised plan, identifying clear graduate outcomes, pathways to postgraduate studies, and opportunities to use your language and cultural skills in a professional environment. In your final year, you will have the opportunity to apply your language and intercultural skills in context, through a project or an internship that will be tailored to your particular interests. This opportunity will also allow you to develop a strong complementarity between the major in European Languages and your other fields of studies.

Language entry level test
The Faculty of Arts retains the right to determine the language proficiency level for any student. To ensure that you are placed in the most appropriate language level according to your individual profile, all students, except beginners, are required to undertake placement testing prior to the start of their first semester of language study. You are not permitted to take classes that are below your tested language proficiency level. Once your place is determined, you will sequentially progress through the language unit levels (e.g., Introductory, Intermediate, Proficient and Advanced).

Availability
European languages is listed in A2000 Bachelor of Arts at Clayton as a major, extended major and a minor, and in A0501 Diploma of Languages at Clayton as a major.
