Overview

The Master of Cultural and Creative Industries is an interdisciplinary course providing you with a critical overview of this rapidly growing sector and its employment opportunities. You will gain a detailed understanding of this dynamic sector in close contact with a range of industry professionals and concrete projects from Australia and overseas.

This course is tailored to the full range of career ambitions within this sector – in industry, the arts, policy, research and the independent sector. You will gain insight into the working of the cultural and creative industries - how creative cities work; what is sustainable development; how the global cultural economy is structured - all with a special emphasis on Australia in the Asian century. Based on our location in Australia’s cultural capital of Melbourne, you will have opportunities to meet local practitioners and experts as well as undertake in-depth analysis of individual cultural industries, cultural projects and international case studies.

Course structure

Part A. Principal study42 credit points

Additional units

18 credit points
You must complete three units (18 credit points) from the list below. Entry level 3 is only required to complete two units (12 credit points) from the list below.
Part B. Application study12 credit points
Part C. Professional enhancement12 credit points
You must complete one or two units (12 credit points) chosen from the list below.

Note: Entry level 2 is only required to complete one unit (6 credit points).

If you intend to pursue the research pathway, please note that APG5084 is a prerequisite for enrolment in APG5849 Research Thesis A.
Part D. Specialist study30 credit points
If you are admitted at entry level 1 you must complete 5 units (30 credit points) from the elective lists below.
If you are admitted at entry Level 2 you must complete 2 units (12 credit points) from the elective lists below.

You may also use this study to complete additional units from Parts A, B and C.

Discipline electives

You may choose one area in which to specialise or choose elective units from a range of streams to tailor the degree to your interests.

Complementary electives

You may take approved units from other Arts Graduate coursework programs subject to meeting individual unit prerequisites. These units must be selected from the Principal study and/or Specialist study parts. Note: A maximum of 12 credit points can be completed from the Complementary electives.
Research pathway18 credit points
If you wish to complete a research thesis (15,000 – 18,000 words), you must enrol in APG5084 in Part C and replace the capstone in Part B (12 points) and one elective in Part D (6 pts) with the following units in consultation with the coordinator.

Notes: APG5084 Designing research is a co-requisite for enrolment in APG5849 Research thesis A and must be completed in the same semester. Only students with a course WAM of 80 or higher will be eligible to commence the research pathway.

The course is structured in four parts: Part A Principal Study, Part B. Applied Study, Part C. Professional Enhancement and Part D. Specialist study.  

Part A. Principal study

These studies will immerse you in Cultural and Creative Industries studies and provide you with foundation knowledge and skills in the field at graduate level. They draw on best practices within the broad field of cultural and creative industries studies practice and research to further your understanding of the complex ecosystem in which cultural and economic goals and dynamics combine in ways that transgress traditional disciplinary and policy boundaries.

Part B. Applied study

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development.

Part C. Professional enhancement

Designed in association with industry experts, select from this suite of professional enhancement offerings to build essential competencies for your career pathway.

Part D. Specialist study

Select from a range of options designed to enhance specific knowledge and skills in Cultural and Creative Industries and related fields. Units not taken in Part A and Part B are also available as elective options.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C and Part. D. 
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C (6 credit points) and Part. D (12 credit points).
  • If you are admitted at entry level 3 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part. A (36 credit points) and Part. B.

Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

b. You must complete three units (18 points) from the list below*:

*Note Entry level 3 is only required to complete two units (12 points) in Part. A (b.)

You must complete one of the following capstone units:

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    investigate a range of distinct practical challenges in the field, and related policy development and implementation, using case studies and fieldwork;

    skillfully and appropriately communicate ideas to a variety of audiences (academic, policy, industry, and community), verbally and in writing;

    undertake an independent research project utilising research methodology and exercising professional ethics.

Monash minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
