Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) and Master of Pharmacy

P6001

Overview

Monash is the only pharmacy course in Victoria to offer a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) course followed by a Masters of Pharmacy course that is integrated with paid a work-based internship. This means that in the same amount of time it takes to become a pharmacist in any other Australian course, you can extend your practice skills and earn two degrees. The BPharm(Hons)/MPharm vertical double degree has two entry pathways - direct-from-school entry and graduate entry. Either pathway will prepare you for a rewarding and portable career.

You will learn about how medicines work and their impact on the body. You will also develop the knowledge, skills, and expertise you need to make a difference as a member of the healthcare team. The course is fully integrated across units and themes, using an interactive instructional model that includes lots of hands-on practice opportunities. You will learn from experienced teachers, pharmacists, and researchers and have access to some of the country's best-equipped facilities at our Parkville campus.

You will undertake work placements in hospitals and community pharmacies, applying an essential understanding of how pharmacists contribute medicines expertise in healthcare settings. You will collaborate on a research project that extends your ability to answer questions and question answers in a focused area of inquiry. You will also connect with other health care students – in the classroom and on your placements.

You will have access to innovative teaching technologies throughout your studies, such as MyDispense – a web-based pharmacy simulation developed by Monash and adopted by leading pharmacy schools around the world. You will also keep a record of your skills development in an electronic portfolio called COMeT. This portfolio will help you to demonstrate your achievements when seeking employment as a student, an intern, and a pharmacist.

Our Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) course is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council. To become a registered pharmacist in Australia, you must first complete the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree, then undertake a period of supervised practice, while also completing an accredited intern training program. The Monash vertical double degree provides the opportunity to complete workplace learning units along with the accredited intern training program. Together, these contribute credit towards a postgraduate qualification (the Master of Pharmacy). Entry to the master's component is contingent upon successful completion of the requirements of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia and securing an approved intern training position.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) course is also offered at our Malaysia campus so Australian-based students have the opportunity to complete a one-semester exchange during their bachelor-level studies. There are also exchange opportunities to undertake laboratory, clinical, social, educational, or business research at an approved overseas institution.

We acknowledge very high-achieving students by offering access to our scholar's program in Stage 1 of the course. This provides exclusive learning opportunities, including:

  • an annual networking event
  • invitations to key Faculty events and seminars
  • a dean's scholarship (domestic students only)
  • a listing in the annual Faculty Prize Giving Program

Exciting and challenging career options await, including working as a community, hospital or consultant pharmacist, or jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, government, regulatory bodies, research and clinical trials. Our graduates work around the world. A degree in pharmacy from Monash is a degree of opportunity.
