Double degree courses include the features of the component degree courses, except that electives may be reduced.

Commerce

B2001 Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in four parts. In this double degree course you complete:

Part A. Core studies

These studies will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Major studies (excludes Actuarial studies)

Your major studies will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study. Due to the double degree structure, the Actuarial studies major is not available in this course.

Part C. Capstone studies

This is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the study of your major.

Actuarial Science

B2033 Bachelor of Actuarial Science is a specialist course, structured in four parts. In this double degree course you complete:

Part A. Core studies

These studies will provide you with a comprehensive study of economics and econometrics disciplines and the impact they have on multi-discipline decision-making in organisations. The units consider the impact on the business, professional and public policy communities.

Part B. Discipline studies

These studies will develop your capacity as a critical and creative professional who is able to apply your knowledge of actuarial science to provide discipline based solutions to commerce. Units contained within the discipline may meet the requirements for professional accreditation bodies.

Part C. Specialist studies

These units let you focus more deeply on advanced areas of actuarial science. They develop your expertise in applying specialised knowledge and approaches to complex commerce problems, preparing you for professional practice or further study. Units contained within this component may meet the requirements for professional accreditation bodies.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete 192 credit points, of which 96 credit points are from the Bachelor of Commerce (including all the requirements in Parts A, B and C for the single degree) and 96 credit points are from the Bachelor of Actuarial Science (including all the requirements in Parts A, B and C for the single degree).

In this double degree, you will complete one major in the Bachelor of Commerce (B2001) and one specialisation in the Bachelor of Actuarial Science (B2033). Where you have space in your degree you may complete an additional major. Some majors, minors and specialisations include the same units. Where this occurs, up to 12 credit points may be shared between:

• two majors; or

• a major and a minor; or

• a specialisation and a major or minor.

Note: Units can only count toward one minor. They cannot be shared across multiple minors.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise specified.

Specialist degree overlap

Some units in your specialist degree may overlap with your major. Where this occurs, up to 12 credit points from the Bachelor of Actuarial Science may also count towards your major in the Bachelor of Commerce component of your double degree.

Core units overlap

In a double degree, some core units may appear in both courses. Where the same core units are required in both components of the double degree, you must complete other units in their place. You may replace up to six overlapping units. These units may be chosen from:

• the Faculty of Business and Economics or from across the University (provided you have met the relevant prerequisites and there are no enrolment restrictions)

• a 12 or 24 credit point project, international experience or internship;

• Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE);

• a minor in another discipline.

Commerce component (96 credit points)

You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Parts A, Part B and Part C, for the Bachelor of Commerce.

Notes:

- If you complete both the Actuarial studies specialisation (within the Actuarial Science component) and the Econometrics major (within the Commerce component), you cannot select the following units in your Econometrics major as you will complete these under the Actuarial Science component:

• ETC3460 (completed in Part C: Specialist Studies).

• ETC2440, ETC2520, and ETC3550 (completed in Part B. Discipline Studies).

- If you complete the Actuarial studies specialisation (within the Actuarial Science component) and the Mathematical foundations of econometrics major (within the Commerce the component), you cannot select the following units as you will complete these under the Actuarial Science component:

• ETC3430 and ETC3460 (completed in Part C. Specialist studies).

- If you complete the Mathematical foundations of econometrics major (within the Commerce component) you cannot take ETC2440, as you will complete it under Part B: Discipline Studies of the Actuarial Science component. You must complete both ETC3410 and ETC3450 from the major's additional core units instead.

Actuarial Science component  (96 credit points)

You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Parts A, Part B, and Part C, for the Bachelor of Actuarial Science.
