The double undergraduate degree adds depth to your studies, provides opportunities to explore more varied interests, and demonstrates to employers a broader range of skills.

The Bachelor of Psychology component of your double degree is designed for those who wish to study psychology and understand the complexities of human behaviour and the biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to individual group and community processes. You will learn about how psychological, social and personality factors influence thinking and behaviour as well as how interventions can be applied to help people lead more satisfying and meaningful lives. Your studies will enable you to pursue a career in a diverse range of fields including research, mental health and welfare, human resources, community services and counselling, education and health services. You could also undertake further steps to qualify to practice as a professional psychologist or pursue a career in counselling, welfare, social work, human resources, marketing or research.

This Bachelor of Commerce component is designed to provide you with the analytical, conceptual and quantitative skills for a wide range of careers in decision making, leadership and management, policy development, and problem solving in the professions, in addition to the corporate and public sectors. Graduates of this course are highly valued for their training in quantitative skills and techniques which are well suited for employment in both Australia and overseas. 

Course structure

Psychology component108 credit points
You must complete 108 credit points from the Bachelor of Psychology, including all of the requirements in Part A and 48 credit points from Part B.
Note: the unit PSY3034 is not available to double degree students.
Commerce component84 credit points
You must complete 84 credit points from the Bachelor of Commerce, including 36 credit points from Part A: comprising all core units; 42 credit points in Part B; and 6 credit points in Part C.

Notes:
- The following Bachelor of Commerce majors are not available to the double degree students: Actuarial studies, Business analytics, Finance, and Mathematical foundations of econometrics.
- Prior to commencing Part B, you must complete requirements in Part A as specified above.
- If you wish to become an accredited accountant you should do ECX2953 Economics instead of ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics. If you are seeking membership of ACCA, CA ANZ or CPA you will not be able to complete all the units required to enter their professional programs. However, the units you are unable to complete can be completed after graduation or via professional body courses.

Bachelor of Psychology

The Bachelor of Psychology is structured in three parts: A. APAC level 1-accredited sequence, B. Discipline streams, and C. Elective studies. In this double degree you complete:

Part A. APAC level 1-accredited sequence 

These studies will address core areas of psychology, including the theoretical and empirical basis of our current understanding of human psychology, brain function and evidence-based approaches to psychological intervention. Building a strong foundation in your understanding of psychology and neuroscience will enable you to appreciate the major challenges in psychology today and in the future. These studies will develop your understanding of scientific methodology and its application in psychology. You will learn to critically evaluate contemporary and historical claims relating to human behaviour and mental processes and apply your understanding to the generation of new research questions.

(This Psychology sequence is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)).

Part B. Discipline streams

These studies will enable you to understand and apply a coherent body of knowledge to a range of contexts such as; personal, social, organisational, technological, global and use knowledge and its practice in an ethical manner, for the benefit of society in general.

Bachelor of Commerce

The Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In this double degree you complete:

Part A. Core studies

This will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Major studies (excludes Actuarial studies, Business analytics, Finance, and Mathematical foundations of econometrics)

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Part C. Capstone studies

This is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the study of your course.

You must complete 192 credit points, of which 108 credit points are from the Bachelor of Psychology (including all of the requirements in Part A and 48 credit points from Part B. Note that the unit PSY3034 is not available to double degree students) and 84 credit points from the Bachelor of Commerce (including 36 credit points from Part A: comprising all core units; 42 credit points in Part B; and 6 credit points in Part C).

Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements. 

Monash College entry requirements: 

Diploma of Business (Commerce stream) Part 2 average: 70% 
Monash University Foundation Year average: 76.25%

Higher education studies: 

Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
