Overview

This course, offered by Nursing and Midwifery, prepares nurses and midwives for leadership roles in specialist practice, management, education, disaster management and leadership, palliative and end of life, trauma nursing and advanced midwifery. You will develop advanced practice knowledge and leadership in specialist practice including skills to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as the ability to formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society. Graduates are employed in a wide range of general and specialist clinical, educational and healthcare environments in senior positions and contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities, in addition to the development of the profession.

You must complete the following unit and either the Research pathway or Coursework pathway below

Research pathway

60 credit points
Students complete either a Minor thesis or a Research project

- All students completing the Research pathway must complete MAP5000

- Students completing the minor thesis must complete and MAP5001 and MAP5002 and 24 credit points from the elective units listed in the coursework pathway below

- Students completing a research project must complete MAP5010 and 36 credit points from the elective units listed in the coursework pathway below

Coursework pathway

60 credit points
You must complete 60 credit points from the following elective units or nursing-relevant units approved by the Course Director.

Note 1: You can only choose one of NUR5326 and MPH5268 to be included in your Leadership and management in healthcare specialisation requirement.

The course is structured in two parts. Part A. Specialist studies and Part B. Advanced scholarly practice.

Part A. Specialist studies

These studies provide options for registered nurses seeking leadership roles to take a professional specialisation appropriate for individual career aspirations. The studies draw on best practices within the specialisations for the development of advanced knowledge and skills.

Part B. Advanced scholarly practice

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options:

  • a 24 or 36 credit point research program. If you wish to use this master's course as a pathway to a graduate research degree you should take this option.
  • a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at Entry level 1 you complete 96 credit oints.
  • If you are admitted at Entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points.
  • If you are admitted at Entry level 3 you complete 48 credit points.

Note: All students complete Part A and B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part B or a combination of both. If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Credit is usually awarded for speciality or elective units and will be assessed individually. If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Advanced nursing studies

You must complete 24 points of elective units listed in Part B coursework pathway.

Education in healthcare

You must complete:

Leadership and management in healthcare

You must complete:

  • NUR5325 Clinical leadership in healthcare (6 points)

Palliative and end of life care

You must complete:

PART B. Advanced scholarly practice (72 points)

You must complete the following unit and either: a. Research pathway or b. Coursework pathway below

  • Students studying in the on-campus mode attend both the Clayton and the Peninsula campuses and some travel between campuses is expected.
  • The trauma nursing specialisation is offered on-campus at Clayton and also fully online.
